There is no force on earth more full of hope and optimism than the spirit of a 10-year old girl. She sees the world with wide-eyed wonder and in her gaze all things are possible. It is the 10-year old girl who starts her own 'save the spotted owl' campaign, explores her backyard like it's a lab of wonder or sets out to stage her own production of Annie starring the neighborhood's kids. They are a unique tapestry of individuals, as varied as they are charming.

But middle school is too often the great divide, a passage where hopeful girls become troubled teens. A playground where self-worth can plummet, academics can become less important than how many followers one has on Twitter, and self-expression becomes too risky; better to follow the crowd than to risk standing out.

The Ophelia Project is designed to be an uplifting, positive and motivational event to assist these future female leaders of the next generation. More than that, it is designed to let them know that there are many who have gone before them, and those attending fully support and understand how difficult and overwhelming life can seem during this time of their lives.

The project will work hard this year and beyond to make a difference in the lives of deserving young girls from throughout the Halifax area. Today, children are being pressured to grow up faster than ever. It is the hope of The Ophelia Project that through mentoring and positive role models, growing up can be something that is not measured on a calendar, but in the positive growth within.
